Bulk Density Tester
The instrument uses gravity to feed powder or granular material through a standardized conical funnel, allowing it to drop from a fixed height into a precision-machined receiving cup. Because fine powders can easily compress or trap air during handling, the tester provides a highly controlled environment to eliminate human variability.
Ford flow cups are commonly used to easily measure the viscosity of paints, inks, lacquers, and other liquids. They are also employed in the ceramic industry to gauge the viscosity of ceramic mixes and glazes, as well as in the food industry for substances like oil, honey, glycerine, and milk.
Tests that can be conducted are:
- Apparent Density
- Bulk Factor
- Pourability
Method A (Fine Granules & Powders)
Designed for fine materials that easily pour through a small funnel.
- Funnel Specs: V-shaped funnel with an upper inside diameter of Ø 9.3 cm and a bottom opening diameter of Ø 0.95 ± 0.08 cm).
- The height is 11.4 cm with a polished stainless steel interior.
- Measuring Cup: A cylindrical cup with a capacity of 100 ± 0.5 cm3 (dimension: 7.98 cm height, Ø 3.99 cm diameter).
- Setup: The funnel is mounted exactly 38 mm above the measuring cup.
Method B (Coarse Granular Materials, Dices, & Pellets)
Designed for coarser materials that do not easily pass through the Method A funnel.
- Funnel Specs: V-shaped funnel with an upper inside diameter of Ø12.7 cm and a bottom opening diameter of Ø2.54 ± 0.16 cm).
- The height is 23.0 cm) with a polished stainless steel interior.
- Measuring Cup: A cylindrical cup with a capacity of (400 cm3).
- Setup: Mounted exactly (38 mm} above the measuring cup.
Method C (Moulding Powders)
Designed for moulding powders that do not pour readily or are bulky. It uses a different procedure involving a graduated cylinder and a weighted plunger (2300 ±20 g) to measure the fluffiness or compacted height.
- Primarily used to measure the apparent density of fine granules that can be poured readily through a “V” shaped funnel, the material under test is allowed to flow into a cylindrical cup with a known volume of 100cm³.
- Dimensions as per the test standards
- Rust free material.
- Easy to handle and clean
